Have you ever felt that you’re inexplicably stuck or anxious? Those feelings often reflect our reliance on outdated coping mechanisms that we have developed early in our lives. Those coping strategies often fit our primary life circumstances, and they were useful in protecting us from unpleasant situations and emotions. But then we grow and our lives change. And then, those mechanisms can turn out to be ill-fitting templates or habits that we no longer need later.
Fortunately, psychotherapy can help. Rather than continuing to unknowingly repeat patterns that are unhelpful and prevent us from finding happiness, peace, or fulfillment in our lives, we can come to live more fully in the life we have, being more of the person we have the potential to become.
You are the only person who can truly know you, but it is very hard to successfully examine yourself. A therapist is someone with whom you can be 100% yourself. As a psychotherapist, I offer an honest, safe relationship in which you can practice becoming authentic with both yourself and others.
Each session will be different as you decide which thoughts and feelings you may be struggling with and want to explore at that point in time.
As your therapist I’m not here to tell you how to live your life or to give you advice. Instead, through our conversations I will help you will gain insight into your patterns and behaviours, so that you find the answers you need to move forward in your life with self-awareness and confidence.
One of my quandaries was a career change, and I chose to train as a therapist. I am an experiential learner and do not feel that therapy is something you simply study. You need to absorb it and experience it in order to “get it”. My training program required extensive personal and group psychotherapy. This immersion gave me a really good grounding in how it feels to be a client in therapy. In that time I tried several therapists and learned the importance of finding the right fit, and not wasting your time and money compromising when you know inside you that it doesn’t feel right.
I have immigrated twice and have a good understanding of the immigrant experience. I know the feeling of not quite belonging to one culture or another.
I offer a free 30-minute phone or video consultation. In this time we establish what you hope to accomplish through psychotherapy while we gather an impression of each other.
