Psychotherapy is a creative process which provides an opportunity for you to discover more about your own authentic beliefs and desires. You already have within you all the insight and strength you need to begin this exploration. And as your therapist I will accompany you on this remarkable journey.
Therapy is not about “fixing” what is broken or “curing” a sickness; nor is it about getting rid of the parts of you that you don’t like. And it’s definitely not about becoming more like other people; therapy is about becoming more of You.
The very same traits, behaviours, and strengths that serve you well in some areas of your life can limit you in others. Working together we will learn more about your unconscious feelings, beliefs, entrenched habits and behavioural patterns; over time, this learning allows you to become more discerning and conscious about your thoughts and choices.
Every therapy is different and we will work at a pace that feels right for you. Psychotherapy has the potential to be life changing, but emotional growth takes time, courage and effort.

Psychodynamic Psychotherapy, often called “Talk Therapy”, is a highly focused conversation between client and therapist. As your therapist I will provide a confidential setting in which you can candidly explore whatever is troubling you. This exploration includes increasing our awareness of your strengths and wisdom, as well as examining those patterns of thought and behaviours which may be impacting you in negative ways. Over time, as your self-understanding grows, it becomes possible to make better, more conscious choices in relation to yourself and others.
We meet once a week in a comfortable office, and the sessions are 50 minutes in length. We speak about whatever you are feeling and whatever is on your mind that day – no two sessions are ever the same. Your “job” will be to speak as honestly as possible about your feelings and thoughts. As your therapist I will not be an “expert” who tells you about yourself. Instead, I will be your partner in this work, attempting to reflect back to you what you already know unconsciously about yourself, but haven’t yet been able to see.
I offer a free initial consultation, in which we can talk about your reasons for seeking therapy, as well as how the process of therapy works and what can be expected from me as your therapist.
After a career in office administration (in both the private and public sectors), I started working as a therapist in 2003. My approach tends to be engaging, respectful, down-to-earth, and candid. I bring experience, openness, interest, spontaneity, and a sense of humour to my work.
As a responsible therapist one of the most important things I can do is to continually increase my self-knowledge. With this in mind, for many years I was a member of a weekly non-facilitated therapy group with other psychotherapists who were committed to ongoing personal growth. For the past several years I have also belonged to a peer supervision group with other senior therapists who are interested in ongoing personal and professional learning.
I offer a free, in-person consultation which will give us both a sense of whether this is a good therapy match. If you are interested in arranging a consultation you can email me at nanettemills@yahoo.ca. I will return your message within 24-48 business hours.
