Changes, whether they are desired, unexpected, or unwanted, are inevitable in our lives. In fact, change might be the one thing of which we can be certain. Understanding one’s relationship to change and how it affects or disrupts us is a key aspect of learning manage the ups and downs we inevitably face.
Psychotherapy is a way to better understand your own life, both your inner world of thoughts and feelings, as well as the outer world, including your relationships with others. A better understanding of your own motivations and desires, your fears and anxieties, may help equip you with the skills and abilities to cultivate the life you want.

I often think of the work that I do as analogous to a walk that we are taking through nature, with you as my guide. This walk you are very familiar with, and along it you will be showing me points of interest, things you like and dislike, places of calm and contemplation, and places that are dangerous and that you may avoid. As your curious companion, I will be asking questions about what you show me. But I may also see certain things that you perhaps haven’t noticed, and I may bring our attention towards them. This kind of exploration can lead towards greater insight and “aha” moments that might help you unlock new possibilities and ways of being in the world. Our perspective can change when we revisit what is familiar with a curious other.
My training was completed at the Centre for Training in Psychotherapy in Toronto. It was curiosity into my own life that drew me to training. Many of the ways I had of being in the world were hidden from me and remained unexplored. I was curious about the unconscious motivations and assumptions within myself. It is this curiosity that keeps me engaged in working with people who are interested in exploring their ways of being in the world. My own exploration has given me hope that others too can transform their lives through their own psychotherapy journey with a curious and empathic other.
I can be reached by email at joel.r.parker@gmail.com and will generally be able to respond within 24 hours of receiving your message. I offer a free 25-minute consultation, either by phone or virtually. Sessions are available over phone, or video.
