I find it hard to describe what psychotherapy is. The very essence of it is two people, sitting together, in a room or online, talking.

But it’s not like a “normal” conversation.

Therapy is a special kind of conversation. The focus is on you, the client. And it’s a space for you to talk about anything that you want. To bring fears, worries, daily struggles, wonderings, and relationship issues.

Psychotherapy can help by helping you make sense of things. That includes making sense of patterns that you may find yourself repeating without always knowing why. It can also help by increasing your sense of autonomy and capacity for decision-making.

I believe it’s important to never underestimate the power of talking. There’s a depth and richness that can come from a connection with a therapist. And it takes time—it’s not a fast process, but when you feel that richness, it can bring about lasting change.

My approach can be described as relational and psychodynamic. I first try to deeply understand what is going on for you, how your life experiences to this point have shaped you and influenced how you may respond to things. I have also recently trained in attachment focussed EMDR which I am enjoying incorporating into my work with my clients. In particular I have noticed it helping shift childhood beliefs about ourselves which may be holding us back.

There is an inherent power dynamic in any therapeutic relationship, and I aim to always be working to increase my awareness of this and reduce it where possible, for example, by being flexible about scheduling where I am able to.

Working “relationally” means that I take the relationship between us seriously and, in time, we may use the relationship between us as part of the work. This might look like talking in more detail about something that happened between us. In my experience this can be very beneficial but it can feel difficult, especially at first, so I would not offer this until we had established a relationship.

I have been told that I am warm and kind and non-judgmental. I know from my own experiences how vulnerable you can feel when looking for a therapist and thinking about sharing your inner world with someone, and I keep this in mind when working with my clients.

I have a particular interest in working with women with ADHD, so please feel free to email me jenny@jennygauntlett.com if you would like to talk further about this aspect of my work.

I originally trained to be a therapist in England, qualifying in 2016. My training there was a mix of modalities, including humanistic, person-centered, and transactional analysis. I then completed further training at the Toronto Institute for Relational Psychotherapy.

I came to the practice of psychotherapy through my own experiences of therapy in my early twenties. I found the process fascinating and the experience transformative, and it sparked a desire in me to train to be a therapist myself.

I am a huge animal lover, and have a dog and two cats.

I believe that all therapists should have their own therapy as knowing what it’s like to sit in the client’s chair reminds us, on a weekly basis, how vulnerable you can feel in that position and what a responsibility we have as therapists. I have weekly therapy and I also engage in supervision, both individually and as part of a group. I consider myself to be a lifelong learner and continue to seek to learn more about what it is that helps and what people need during the process of psychotherapy.
