The longer we have carried on in life as best we can, but without finding deep or enduring satisfaction, the more we can feel burdened with unexpressed need, desire, fear, sadness, or anger. We may feel oppressed by the certainty that we can never be ourselves fully, or change our situation significantly enough to feel any sense of freedom or fulfillment. Many of us, at one time or another in our lives, feel confused about who we are and what we want.
The compassionate and attentive listening of a therapist will support your effort to appreciate your uniqueness and alter the beliefs and habits that prevent change and vitality in your life.
First of all, in conversation, we take the time you need to reveal a nuanced and detailed picture of who you are currently and the areas of your life that are dissatisfying to you. A therapy session is a place where you can speak and anticipate being heard. This process is dependent on trust, and the building of that trust will take varying lengths of time, determined by your comfortable pace. My respect for every aspect of who you are and what you bring to our sessions, and my assurance of absolute confidentiality are the basic underpinnings I provide to create this trust. As it grows, we will explore your inner life more deeply so we can find your belief in yourself as well as increase your confidence to be more the way you aspire to be in relationships and in the world. Some of this will be achieved by the two of us examining your past and making sense of it, some will arise from our joint efforts to explore your feelings in the present.
My background is in the arts, a world that remains important to me. My practice in that life once lacked a kind of continuity, with urgency between projects and a reluctance to linger to explore the hows and whys of my choices and impulses. Therapy has provided that missing ingredient. With its attunement to unconscious life, psychodynamic psychotherapy provides room for the complexity and ambiguity so often bypassed in our everyday lives. It is a privilege to explore these qualities with others on an individual basis.
You can reach me by phone or email Monday to Friday 9am-5pm. I will get back to you within 24 hours. I offer an initial 30-minute therapy consultation in my office for a fee of $50. You can ask questions and get a sense of whether you feel I am someone you are comfortable talking to.
Sessions are held in my office; however, if circumstances make that temporarily difficult I do phone sessions and Skype.
