People who come to psychotherapy understand something is “not quite right” in their internal worlds. The presence of these disturbances make themselves known to us as unpleasant feelings, like anxiety, despair, hopelessness, anger; or more generalised feelings—not being quite alive, not being able to relate comfortably with others, feeling like a fraud, or as if somehow trapped in a kind of limbo, waiting for life to truly begin. For many, these feelings become unbearable. They can lead to self-destructive ways of “acting out”, such as substance abuse, addiction, isolation, or violence.

So we talk. We look for reasons why. We dig. And it seems that is all we do.

But while we are talking, the possibility for something extraordinary unfolds, a dialogue of a different sort, a healing kind of exchange that has the potential to envelop us both, as we come to know and trust one another. Through this trust, and through the work of self-exploration in the safe and non-judgemental arena therapy offers, you may begin to feel more present, more solidly assembled, more hopeful.

Most of our internal struggles are rooted in some distortion in the way we perceive ourselves and others. Establishing an effective psychotherapeutic relationship, a real partnership, opens up the possibility for a shifting perspective, one that is less fixed and more spacious. By being heard and understood, often for the very first time, we may come to understand our own thoughts and feelings—and by extension those of important people in our lives—in a less rigid, more realistic and more nuanced way.

As psychotherapist, I see myself as research assistant/companion as together we explore your internal world and try to shed some light on those things that have become problematic in your life. But always with you leading the way. We do this by talking (and with you doing most of that). I listen, ask questions, make observations and try to discern patterns and repetitions that may be hidden, just below the surface, as you go about your everyday life. Ideally, we will meet once a week for 50 minutes to talk freely and honestly in an atmosphere of kindness, compassion, and, I hope, a little humour. Our meetings can become a kind of anchoring point in your week, one that provides some “food for thought” during the in-betweens.

I found my way into psychotherapy quite late in life, after a lengthy career as a journalist, mostly overseas. I also came to practice psychotherapy after many years of my own therapy. This, I am convinced, is a kind of bedrock requirement to do this work. Academically, I hold an honours degree in philosophy, and spent six years in a graduate program studying psychoanalytic psychotherapy at the Centre for Training in Psychotherapy. I graduated in 2015, though I have been working as a therapist since 2012. I am a member of the College of Registered Psychotherapists of Ontario (CRPO) and the Canadian Association for Psychodynamic Therapy (CAPT).

My office is located at the 400 Dupont Therapy Centre on Dupont, about five minutes’ walk west of the Dupont Subway stop, at Spadina, in Toronto. My fee is $120 per session. Though face-to-face meetings are preferable, I can do Skype or FaceTime if necessary. If you would like to talk further about our working together, please feel free to email me at dstevenmundy@gmail.com, or call me, 416-737-6620. I offer a free 30-minute initial consultation. All communication is strictly confidential.
