About

People come to therapy for many reasons.  You may feel stuck or unlike yourself, or maybe you’re repeating patterns you would rather not. Perhaps you’re struggling in your relationships, or you’ve been deeply affected by an experience and need a place to speak about it.

Therapy can help.

Working with a therapist can enable you to:

Develop deeper self-awareness: helping you get to the bottom of thoughts, behaviours and patterns in your life and relationships that you would like to shift.

Find clarity: helping you separate past feelings from present ones, explore how things from the past may be affecting you now and how to move forward.

Foster personal growth: helping you become more connected to yourself, your feelings, and what feels true for you.

Find a safe place: to work through and process events or times in your life that may be challenging or unexplored.

The therapy hour is for you. Sessions are confidential and offer you a private and non-judgmental space.  We will work at a pace that feels right for you.

We can discuss anything you would like to bring in. You may have parts of your life, from the present or the past, that you want to focus on. We can talk about your relationships, your feelings about yourself, explore places you feel stuck, or patterns you’ve noticed popping up. You can bring in dreams, daydreams, and things that bring you joy in your life.

If you choose to start therapy, we will meet online using a secure video conferencing platform or over the phone. My fee is $130 per 50-minute session.

I offer psychodynamic therapy, which is a medium to long-term therapy best suited for once-a-week sessions for at least 3 months to 6 months. Often, clients continue with therapy beyond that as they begin to feel the shifts that therapy is making in their life.

I hold an honours diploma in Social Service Work, and I am a graduate of the Centre for Training in Psychotherapy (CTP). I am a member of the Canadian Association for Psychodynamic Therapy (CAPT). I have a background in the performing arts.

As a Social Service Worker, I worked with many different communities of people and found myself drawn to working with people one on one. With that work came the opportunity and privilege to get to know and relate to people on a deeper level. Training to become a psychotherapist has allowed me to continue this.

My own experience of therapy led to my interest in studying psychotherapy.

I started therapy when I found my coping strategies in life no longer worked and the people closest to me didn’t understand what I was going through. This was not surprising, as I barely understood myself.

I was used to doing things on my own and it felt hard to reach out. But I did. In therapy, I found the opportunity to challenge and change elements of my life and things about myself that I thought were unmovable. It helped me step out of ways of thinking and relating that were not working for me and showed me that things could be different.

Finding a therapist you feel comfortable speaking with is really important.  Please email me at  jwestoby.psychotherapy@gmail.com to schedule a free 20-minute virtual consultation to see if working together feels like a good fit.
