About
“The ability to love, to invest in life, to create and fulfill our dreams, is in ongoing dialogue with our capacity to search for emotional truths, to tolerate pain, and to mourn. While our journeys to healing vary, each starts with the decision to search, to open the door, and rather than turn away from the past, to walk toward it.” ~Galit Atlas
In therapy, I work with individuals to explore feelings, thoughts, desires, fears, and behaviours. The aim is for you to better understand yourself and then work with what you find. Together, we consider the deeper causes behind your current challenges, as well as aspects of your life that you would like to improve.
Often people start therapy unsure what the problem is, but are aware of feeling sad, empty, and/or lonely. Here’s where I come in. Working collaboratively, I help individuals to understand the roots of their symptoms and better navigate what is painful and confusing.
If this speaks to you, I hope you’ll reach out.
I work with adolescents (16+) and adults, one-on-one, online and over the phone, to provide psychodynamic psychotherapy (talk therapy) in a safe, caring, and non-judgemental space. Sessions are typically 50 minutes in length and occur at regular intervals.
I will compassionately listen and ask questions. We will make space for feelings, thoughts, and beliefs. We will look for and be curious about patterns: how and why they came about, and how they impact the here and now. Change happens in the wake of understanding.
My approach is client-led in terms of pace and direction. As every therapy is unique, a client’s goals and needs inform the tools I use. I draw upon trauma and attachment theories, as well as body-centred practices, dream work, and mindfulness. I work collaboratively with a client to find the most effective ways to support growth and healing.
While I enjoy meeting with individuals from all walks of life, I particularly appreciate the work I’ve done with people navigating early adulthood, educators, parents, and people contending with traumatic experiences.
My passion for nurturing growth first led me to the field of education. For more than two decades I worked as a high school teacher, guidance counsellor, and Gender and Sexuality Alliance (GSA) staff advisor. That interpersonal work with a diverse spectrum of individuals sparked a deep curiosity about the relational and emotional challenges that impact well-being.
I was moved to learn more about how to ease suffering, and how to support individuals with moving forward after harmful experiences. I wondered about the roots of psychic pain and persistent patterns that no longer serve.
This curiosity and the many benefits I experienced in my personal therapy, especially during times of transition and upheaval, opened in me a desire to help others in a similar way. I felt called upon to work with individuals psychodynamically: to create a warm, non-judgemental space where all feelings are welcome, and the past can be unpacked, understood, and accepted. It matters to me that I’m able to offer a space where it is safe to work with the aspects of life that are painful and confusing.
I completed my training at the Centre for Training in Psychotherapy, and from there I moved into private practice.
The first meeting is a free 30-minute consultation. This offers us a chance to meet and see if we are a good fit. We can discuss what brings you to therapy, and you will have an opportunity to ask questions.
At present, I work online and over the phone on Sundays. If you would like to set up an appointment, email me at jmunro.therapy@gmail.com. I will get back to you as soon as possible, usually within 24 hours during the week.
