People tend to seek therapy when they are experiencing some kind of challenge, such as a life transition, loss, grief, troubled relationships, unfulfillment, anxiety, disconnected identity, or low self-esteem. You may have the feeling that something in your life is not working and needs to change. And while change can be wonderful, it can also be daunting.
Therapy is a safe space where you can talk about the parts of you that feel too vulnerable to share elsewhere. It is an opportunity to be heard and understood, and a place to build awareness about some of the patterns in your life that may no longer serve you. This can lead to an increased sense of who you are and how you relate to others, which gives rise to the emergence of new possibilities.
I use a collaborative approach which allows the therapeutic relationship to grow and unfold naturally. We will move at a pace that feels right for you, without expectation or judgment.
I practice psychodynamic psychotherapy – an approach that looks at a person’s experience from multiple lenses, as well as the unconscious forces that impact behaviours and decisions, with the aim of bringing awareness to the unknown. This type of exploration takes time, and the therapy leans mid to long-term with session frequency typically on a weekly basis.
I am deeply moved by the exploration of how our inner life affects the relationships we have with others, as well as the one with ourselves. My approach is one of empathy and curiosity. I do not believe in “getting over something,” but, I do believe in the power of moving through something. While it may be difficult at times, moving through allows you to be with your feelings, and to check in with your experience.
I have previously worked in the education and non-profit sectors. I am a graduate of the Centre of Training in Psychotherapy (CTP), an extensive 6-year academic program that trains psychotherapists with an immersive and experiential approach. I am grateful for my own experience in therapy, and its profound impact that led me to want to do this work with others.
As someone with Caribbean roots who was born outside of Canada, I understand that immigration can shape who we are, and impact the intersections of our identity as well as intergenerational family dynamics. I have experienced cross-cultural relationships through a unique lens, and bring a culturally-sensitive approach to working with others.
I offer a space to see, and to be seen, which allows for a deepening of self-understanding and personal growth.
I invite you to meet confidentially over a virtual, secure video platform, or by phone. Sessions are $130/60 minute session. I offer an initial 30-minute consultation at no charge. There is no pressure. We can discuss what brings you to therapy, and get to know each other to determine if working together is the right fit. Please feel free to reach out to me via email at cheyennalw@gmail.com to arrange a time to meet. I am currently available for daytime appointments.
