Who We Are

The members of Toronto Psychotherapy Group are professional psychotherapists who have graduated from rigorous academic and experiential training programs. All therapists listed here are registered with the College of Registered Psychotherapists of Ontario (CRPO), or other governing body (e.g. The Ontario College of Social Workers and Social Service Workers (OCSWSSW)) that oversees the regulation of psychotherapy in Ontario. As a group we share a commitment to professional excellence, but we are also a diverse collection of individuals, each with his or her own unique approach to the practice of therapy. Most TPG therapists offer ongoing online therapy and phone therapy where distance – or distancing – may be a concern.

Members of Toronto Psychotherapy Group have been trained extensively in psychodynamic therapy, which is based in the view that human emotions, thoughts, and behaviours are shaped by both conscious and unconscious motivations. Psychodynamic therapy involves exploring this psychological depth—both what we are aware of, and what we have not yet come to know about ourselves. Some individual members of TPG are also trained in psychoanalytic theory, couples therapy (e.g., Emotionally Focused Therapy, or the Psychobiological Approach to Couples Therapy [PACT®]) family systems therapy, body-centered therapy, cognitive-behavioural therapy, fertility counselling, or psychedelic integration therapy. You can read about our specializations on our individual profiles.

This wide array of education and expertise amongst our members gives you a great deal of choice when it comes to selecting a therapist to help you in your search for greater emotional balance and well-being.

Why is this significant for you?

Definition of Regulation

Anyone using the title “psychotherapist” or any abbreviation thereof; or anyone holding her/himself out as qualified to practice psychotherapy in Ontario (no matter what title s/he may use), and anyone performing the controlled act of psychotherapy must be registered with the College of Registered Psychotherapists of Ontario (CRPO) or another College that oversees the controlled act of psychotherapy in Ontario: College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO), College of Occupational Therapists of Ontario (COTO), College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario (CPSO), College of Psychologists of Ontario (CPO), Ontario College of Social Workers and Social Service Workers (OCSWSSW).

It is important that you know that your therapist has successfully completed “a structured coherent program of education and training in psychotherapy” as defined by the CRPO. This ensures that your therapist has attained a level of expertise as well as having sufficient “experiential learning and direct client work” to indicate that he or she can provide safe, professional care.

What you can expect from a therapist you locate on the Toronto Psychotherapy Group website includes, but is not limited to, the following:

  • The therapist is a regulated health professional
  • The therapist will maintain current knowledge skill and judgment
  • The therapist will have worked under clinical supervision
  • The therapist is accountable to a regulatory body
  • The therapist holds current liability insurance
  • The therapist is a graduate of a rigorous training institution

Our Mission

Toronto Psychotherapy Group is an organization founded by a group of psychotherapists. We serve dual interests: one, the needs of individuals like you, who are seeking to enter therapy; and two, the interests of our community network of Toronto area-based therapists. We meet the needs of prospective clients by offering you sound information about well-trained local therapists.

Toronto Psychotherapy Group provides a high-visibility platform for its subscribing members. As an association of individuals committed to the psychodynamic tradition, both as accumulated knowledge and clinical practice, we also strive to offer resources meant to foster professional excellence, integrity, and the highest ethical standards articulated by the Code of Ethics for Registered Psychotherapists in Ontario in the practice of psychotherapy.

Toronto Psychotherapy Group heartily encourages contact with Toronto’s broader health care community, allied professionals, and the general public to disseminate information about psychodynamic therapy and its local practitioners.

A note about our imagery

Real change reverberates—its effects are neither limited nor concentrated but extend out, far beyond the site of action. One small droplet of water shifts a whole liquid surface.

Many things happen in the therapy process. Some show themselves in the moment, and some appear only when looking back on it. In our committed efforts to evolve, our lives can open to profound change. The relationships that connect us to others are correspondingly altered as we begin to relate differently, with more presence, depth, and heart. Finding therapeutic help in meeting our emotional difficulties is not a selfish act – quite the contrary. When we work to create positive change in ourselves, then our way of being in relationship to others, and in the world, can also change for the better.

In psychoanalytic terms, water is the symbol of the dynamic unconscious. If there are fixed or obstructed places in our inner lives, then our capacities for connection, flow, and efficacy are dammed or stalled. Many people seek therapy after struggling with a sense of stasis or stuckness in their lives. Therapy can be a powerful resource for expansion, for flux and flow—the kind of shift we see when a single droplet of water sets a fluid surface into motion.
