    Welcome!

Whether you are challenged in asserting yourself at the workplace, overwhelmed with adjusting to a new place, language and culture, or feeling under the stress of raising children and especially teenagers, I can relate. The struggle to find your own way, and the need to address mid-life crisis, are challenges that have engaged me closely both personally and as a therapist. I know from experience that discovering yourself creatively as an artist or a business owner requires internal work to build self-awareness and strength.

My long-term clients say that through our work together they have attained relief from their despair and have shifted their attitudes and self-perceptions in a way they never foresaw. To many of them, the world is now presenting more possibilities. Their interactions with others no longer shake them. They stand firmer on their feet. In speaking to others, they find the words they did not have before. They are braver, and feel both freer and more connected with themselves and others.

Each client brings a whole new world of experience to me. Despite my familiarity with certain issues, what you are going through is unique to you. In this sense, all that is brought to therapy is fresh to me.

In individual psychotherapy sessions, I listen more than speak. My analytical mind, intuition, and solid knowledge combined do the work. I have been trained to tune in and capture what that creative work has generated. I am patient to allow the fuller picture to unfold. While not all of our experience is worded, conversation is our means of working. Words are the tool, but ultimately, change is lived.

As a couples therapist, I follow the Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT) model of engagement, staying closely with the emotion at any given moment and helping the couple name the feelings that arise in the session so they can be understood. Understanding brings down levels of tension, calms the couple, and opens the door to more caring interactions, compassion, and love.

My ability to transcend cultural and language barriers and seek to know a person from deep within is rooted in my upbringing, my exposure to multiple countries and journey through different careers. In addition to English, I speak Bulgarian and fully understand Russian.

My background as a professional in the business world, having studied computer science and human-computer interaction, gave me the ability to bridge the cognitive with the intuitive side. I held positions with high-profile companies where my work focused on the subject of ease of use, simplicity of design, productivity, and project management.

While my thinking mind was preoccupied, my soul was craving a return to my early passion for understanding human psychology. I completed a rigorous training at the Center for Training in Psychotherapy in Toronto and gained invaluable clinical experience spending hundreds of hours helping clients.

I have spoken on the topic of psychotherapy several times on the multicultural radio program AM530 in Toronto. To learn more about me or read my blog, you can visit my web site www.uliyanamarkova.com, or find me on Facebook.
